Dresden is spoilt for choice when it comes to venues, each of which offers a packed events schedule: Semper Opera, Dresden State Theatre, Kraftwerk Mitte and the new concert hall in the Kulturpalast are just some that stand out. The 30+ stages constitute a mini-cosmos of classical, modern, experimental and chamber music, cabaret, amateur dramatics, puppetry and open-air theatre. How about a night out at the only independent operetta company nationwide? Or an evening of world-class dance and ballet right where the genre was revolutionised in the 1920s? And then there are the many top-class festivals...

Small but perfectly formed events, festivals, unique offerings and serendipity – as a cultural venue, Dresden has few peers. The stand-out soundscape is no exception. Take, for example, the amazing Moritzburg Festival: extraordinary venues and a sprinkling of stardust alongside professionalism and passion personified make it one of the leading European chamber music festivals. Come summer, meanwhile, many of the great wine estates on the south-facing slopes of the Elbe valley double up as platforms for classical and contemporary music. Between June and September, the Musik an den Höfen des Meissnischen Landadels concert series will be hosted by twelve stately homes and castles such as Batzdorf, Hirschstein, Proschwitz and Zabeltitz.
