Yay! Elbe Cycle Route, here we come!
Germany’s many cycle routes may set the bar high, but even among them, few can match the innumerable cultural and natural landmarks found along the banks of the Elbe. The Saxony stretch stands out in particular – from the dramatic rockfaces of Saxon Switzerland in the east to the rounded summits of the Meissen Spaar range. Then, in the far northwest, comes the town of Torgau, synonymous with Martin Luther. And in-between, unspoilt nature, vineyards, village greens and the picturesque old towns of Meissen and Pirna. Overnight options run from simple guesthouses and family-run boarding houses to plush hotels, while the catering ranges from hearty farmhouse cooking to Michelin-starred restaurants. The summer wine festivals alone are more than visitworthy – and you’ll want to stash a take-home bottle or two in your saddlebag.
