The Dresden Zwinger is the most important building of the late baroque period and, with its crown gate, is considered the city's landmark.
The Zwinger was built between 1709 and 1728 by Augustus the Strong. Originally intended as an orangery, Augustus the Strong soon used the place for pompous parties and presented his art treasures in the galleries. The name "Zwinger" recalls the former fortifications of Dresden. Today the Zwinger houses museums such as the Mathematical-Physical Salon, the Porcelain Collection and the Old Masters Picture Gallery.
