The wine hiking trail runs along the slopes and through the forests of the Elbe valley in the greater Dresden area. From Pirna via Pillnitz we hike in two day stages to the capital of Saxony. Then four more stages await us, most of which run close to the banks of the Elbe and take us all the way to Seußlitz.

Stage 1: From Pirna to Pillnitz (16 km)

After a city walk in Pirna, we cross the Elbe by ferry and initially turn our backs on the river. We hike leisurely through Copitz, Hinterjessen as well as Oberpoyritz and meet the Elbe again in Pillnitz, where Pillnitz Castle with its water palace offers a magnificent panorama.

Stage 2: From Pillnitz to Dresden (22 km)

Vineyard walls lead us parallel to the Elbe into the state capital Dresden. Along the way we see the three Elbe castles of Schloss Eckberg, Schloss Albrechtsberg and Villa Stockhausen. In Dresden, we decide for ourselves which of the many sights we would like to visit.

Stage 3: From Dresden to Zitzschewig (15 km)

With the Wilder Mann district, we leave Dresden and set off on a woodland exploration tour. In Boxdorf and near Radebeul we let our eyes wander far into the distance from beautiful vantage points. Half-timbered houses, small churches, vineyards, imposing manor houses and inns line the idyllic path.

Stage 4: From Zitzschewig to Niederau (16 km)

To Weinböhla via Coswig, where the Spitzberg offers a beautiful view of the Elbe valley. Behind Weinböhla begins the Friedewald, a protected forest and pond area that was created in the 16th century. We then pass Lauben Castle and can climb up to the viewing platforms of the Friedensturm (Peace Tower) and the König-Albert-Turm (King Albert Tower). Niederau railway station is Germany's oldest railway station still in operation.

Stage 5: From Niederau to Meißen (13 km)

Today we return to the Elbe, whose course we will follow throughout the day. Along the south-eastern side of the Spaargebirge, an elevation only 3 km long, we pass old vineyards. On the Elbe cycle path we finally reach Meißen.

Stage 6: From Meißen to Seußlitz (16.5 km)

Before we set off on the last stage of the Saxon Wine Trail, we explore the old town of the porcelain city of Meißen, with Meißen Cathedral, the market square and the Benno Church. On the right side of the Elbe, we pass the Proschwitz estate to the Elbe breakthrough and Zadel, where we can taste the region's wine at the Vierseithof farm. Wonderful mixed forests line our route to Seußlitz, offering views of the Elbe Valley again and again.
