The more than thousand years old "cradle of Saxony" enchants far away from the hustle and bustle of the big city with its winding alleys, contemplative restaurants and its historical and magnificent architecture. A visit to the old town of Meissen is like a journey into the past. Almost at every corner there are culturally and historically significant old town houses to discover. The Monument Route leads through the lovingly restored, historic old town of Meissen, which is characterized by Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Over cobblestone cobbled alleys, romantic squares and streets lined with baroque and renaissance buildings, the route leads to the most beautiful sights of the wine and porcelain city of Meissen. A total of 25 historical monuments are visited along the route, including the late Gothic town hall, the magnificent Renaissance portal and, of course, the proud architectural ensemble consisting of Albrechtsburg Castle, cathedral, bishop's palace and canon courts, which rises magnificently above the old town of Meissen.

If you not only want to marvel at the magnificent buildings, but are also interested in additional information, you should have your smartphone ready. With the help of QR codes, one is directed to a website set up for the monument route, which provides exciting background information on the objects.

Turn-by-turn directions

The tour starts at Roßmarkt. From there you turn northwest and arrive at Fleischergasse, at the beginning of which you will discover a representative baroque building from the 16th century. From Fleischergasse you turn left into Göhrnische Gasse and follow it until Jüdenbergstrasse branches off to the right. On this street you will come to Rosengasse, at the end of which stands the Frauenkirche, which is known for its carillon made of Meissen porcelain, among other things. From there, turn left onto the street "An der Frauenkirche", past the Tuchmachertor and the Bahrmannsche Brauhaus and over the Superindentendur steps. Here you turn right onto the street "Freiheit". The path leads you past a letter stone, in which all letters of the alphabet can be read out. Follow Freiheit until you reach the St.-Afra-Church. There you turn right and cross the Schlossbrücke to the cathedral of Meissen and Albrechtsberg. If you need a break after the ascent or just want to enjoy the view over the roofs of the city, there are several possibilities for a stop on the castle hill. Afterwards, the tour continues over the castle bridge and down the castle steps to the sunken path. This is crossed after a few steps by the street Schlossberg, which you turn left onto. Crossing the Schlossberg, at the beginning of which you can see a half-timbered house from 1575, you will reach the Theater of Meissen. Continue along Leipziger Straße until you reach Lorenzgasse on the right, which leads to Baderberg. From there, follow Burgstraße to the left until you reach the picturesque market place of Meissen. Here you should take some time to admire the individual sights. Worth seeing are not only the Frauenkirche on the north side of the market place and the late gothic town hall, but also the historic town houses such as the renaissance buildings with the house numbers 4 and 5 and the market pharmacy from 1561. Afterwards you continue the tour on the Elbstraße, where you reach Heinrichsplatz. You will pass a baroque residential and commercial building from 1662 and the "Zollhof", a rich town house

from the early 17th century. In front of the Ice Safe Venezia, you turn sharp right into the narrow Löwengässchen, which ends at Marktgasse. On this street you turn left. Then the route leads around the Kleinmarkt, past the municipal library to Gerbergasse. Follow the Gerbergasse back to the Roßmarkt.
